The Better Business Bureau First Annual Shred Day To Prevent ID Theft…is a Success

The Better Business Bureau Canton held it’s first annual “Shred It and Forget It” day Saturday April 21, 2007 to promote Identity Theft prevention and awareness.

The event started at 9:00 am with cars in the parking lot and lined up down Cleveland Avenue as early as 7:00 am. “We never would have anticipated so many people that early…they were very understanding and patient.” Stated Joy Bender Vice President of Operations of the Better Business Bureau.

Throughout the day bags of information on how to prevent identity theft were given to each vehicle and cross-cut shredders were given away to every fiftieth car.

By the end of the day there were nearly 300 vehicles in attendance, shredding more than 20,000 pounds of paper. A second shred truck had to be brought in to finish and was shredding until 5:00 pm.

The Bureau has received many positive comments from the community. One consumer called into the BBB stating “Congratulations on your Shredding Party. It was the most well organized things I have ever been to. You did a terrific job and thank you for your courtesy”. Another consumer commented “I attended your shred day. It was well organized and I thank you.”

The Bureau would like to personally thank all sponsors:

Headline sponsor: Huntington Bank, Sponsors: Krugliak Wilkens Griffiths & Dougherty, Walmart at the strip, Walmart Rt 62, Best Buy, BJ’s , Minerva Printing, Shriver Elementary School, Stark County Commissioners and Canton City Police Department. And a special thank you to the Timken High School golf team for unloaded boxes and bags from vehicles of information to be shredded . “We couldn’t have asked for more dedicated volunteers. Many of them stayed until 5:00 pm even though the event was to be over at 1:00 pm.” Bender says.

“Shred It and Forget It” will be an annual event and The Better Business Bureau is already making plans for next year.
